I’m a CANDIDATE at May’s elections. Sign the Fair Play Pledge HERE & tell voters across the UK that you will play fair this May by campaigning honestly and respectfully.

I’m a VOTER in the United Kingdom concerned about the state of political campaigning. Add your name HERE to our call for all candidates at May’s elections to sign the Fair Play Pledge.

The rise of the internet and social media has had a profound effect on democracy. We are now living in the digital age but the rules that govern our democracy have not been updated in decades. Another round of elections are imminent and the fact they are being conducted during a pandemic means the primary place for campaigning will be the Wild West of online spaces.

We are asking all candidates at the Welsh, Scottish and English elections to commit to campaign in an open, democratic and respectful manner and be democracy advocates if elected into office.

By signing this pledge, candidates commit to:

  1. Campaign openly.
  2. Financial fair play.
  3. Campaign respectfully.
  4. Respect privacy.
  5. Champion defending and enhancing our democracy if elected.

Recent years have seen the substance and tenor of political debate in this country and around the world become increasingly toxic. Democracy is like an ecosystem. Pollution from any single source damages the whole environment. Enough is enough.

The UK’s democracy laws are robust in the analogue sphere but have not been updated to reflect the increasing digitisation of political campaigning. With the COVID-19 pandemic enhancing this process, 2021 is the right time for all candidates to say they will do things better.

By signing up to the Fair Play Pledge, candidates are making five clear commitments:

Campaign Openly
To campaign honestly and transparently. To refrain from promoting or supporting the promotion of online misinformation, disinformation, fakery or trickery. To acknowledge and correct mistakes if they arise.

Campaign Respectfully
To refrain from abusive, bullying or intimidating behaviour and to call out your own supporters if they do the same. Criticise policies, not individuals.

Financial Fair Play
To uphold campaign finance laws and refrain from using digital technology to circumvent the rules.

Respect Privacy
To campaign in a manner that respects the privacy of voters and abides by data protection law.

Champion defending and enhancing our democracy if elected
If successful, to use their influence as elected politicians to champion the strengthening and updating of UK democracy.

Politics is not a game but it is being treated as one. We call on all candidates to commit to the above and help create a better democratic culture.

The Fair Play Pledge is endorsed by: Fair Vote UK, Compassion in Politics, Unlock Democracy, Electoral Reform Society, Foxglove, Open Rights Group, Global Witness, Centenary Action Group, Who Targets Me, The Citizens & Clean up the Internet

We are a group of foundation-funded civil society organisations concerned about the threats posed to our electoral and democratic processes. It shouldn’t be up to us to ask politicians and candidates to behave transparently and honestly but regulation has not kept pace with the digital revolution.
